The Will’s Wheel, 2018
Acrylic on canvas
33 x 46 cm

Will = “The power of control over one’s own actions or emotions.”

I’ve been at both the effect and the cause of wrong behavior. I’ve made and will make bad choices; some knowingly and others unknowingly. I know the feeling of regret to a certain extent. One night I was studying the subject of self-discipline in order to learn how I can make better choices or at least help prevent bad ones. I was thinking of the painting “Dunkirk Beach At Night” that I had made not long ago and imagined this story that I’m a captain of a ship lost at sea unable to navigate the waters and find my way out of a storm. A feeling like I lacked control of my ship or my fate. And so I began to imagine a ship’s wheel that controls the direction of my will. When I have an important choice to make or am looking down a bad path, I would imagine the wheel turning to hopefully help change course and guide me in the right direction.
