Dunkirk Beach at Night, 2018
Acrylic on canvas
24 x 33 cm

I’ve lived for years on this beach. I’ve heard its endless song and seen its different colours and moods. The water has also seen and heard mine.

But during the night, the water always looks the same. The water turns black and its horizon line blends with its night sky. It looks as if you can walk off the edge of the earth and fall into empty space. This image reminds me of the worst night of my life when I dropped to my knees without strength or hope next to an abyss. It also reminds me of the comfort I can find at the beach. Like the love of my friends and family that were there to help pick me up, and a peaceful walk.
